Client Brief
The clients had three redundant courtyard areas that surrounded the main house and a separate, smaller cottage. The brief was to unify and link these spaces with sensibility to the surrounding buildings and landscape. They have a large
family property with a fair amount of land
and a very active lifestyle and wanted
low maintenance solutions that could
also yield some food crops and herbs.

Outcome
For the main courtyard between the two buildings the challenge was to create a scheme that opened out and gave a feeling of light and space to this enclosed area. The solution was a formal parterre using box hedging and filled with herbs. Clipped box balls on the four corners add detail and planters in the central areas give focus and interest.
The planting scheme was deliberately kept low to maximize the feeling of space and proportionally balance with the cottage.
The client brief for the larger courtyard was to have this area as the main vegetable growing space, incorporating a greenhouse within the design. Reclaimed brick paths cut through the gravel to define entrances and a series of circular beds have been created for planting and to break up the linear structure of the space. Further beds have been added along the two main walls and Portuguese Laurel has been used to create hedging and soften the hardscaping.

Client Testimonial
We were so lucky to stumble across Steve during an episode of acute tennis elbow. As a qualified Physiotherapist and married to a Farrier we are inexperienced with any gardening techniques or design.
Not only did he provide us with designs and ideas for our cottage kitchen courtyard gardens ,he was also on hand to make them evolve.
An easy going, approachable person who is happy to work as part of a team, Steve made our wishes come true and we now have a superb area ,harvesting tomatoes and cucumbers along with sweetpeas and sunflowers for the children. Nothing was out of the way for him and nothing too much trouble.
We could not recommend him more highly.
